STEPSTOOLS TO HOLSTEINS

Kayla’s birth was beauty rising out of sadness. The previous fall I learned that a mother can never find a sufficient way to say goodbye to a child she’s never met, but a few months after my third pregnancy was cut short, I was pregnant with Kayla. Ever since, Kayla has brought my life renewal and hope.

When she was thirteen years old, our family moved from two-tenths of an acre in suburbia to fourteen acres with an ancient farmhouse and wooded, rocky fields. Kayla and I immediately cleared land to garden. She learned to use our old cooking fireplace as it was intended and, with Bill, she repaired outbuildings for our farm animals.

Kayla started dreaming of homesteading as a toddler, armed with a stepstool and a kitchen knife. By age 15, she was growing her own vegetables, making sourdough biscuits from scratch, and caring for chickens, rabbits, ducks, and Holsteins.

Kayla’s favorite thing to do with maple?

“I love to bake with maple,” she says. “The Maple Blueberry Pie on page 122 is my absolute favorite of any dessert I’ve ever created.”
